The parts of a katana, named.
A quick reference to the parts and details you see in our product descriptions. Use the names below as you explore a piece's gallery and specifications.
- Tsuka
- The handle. Its length, core, wrap and internal construction vary by model and are stated when confirmed.
- Ito
- The cord wrapped around the tsuka in a crossing pattern. It provides grip texture and is usually the most visible color element on the handle.
- Menuki
- Small ornaments positioned beneath the ito. Their material and design vary with the fittings set.
- Kashira
- The pommel cap at the end of the handle. Its material normally matches the wider fittings set.
- Tsuba
- The guard between handle and blade.
- Habaki
- The collar at the base of the blade. It helps seat the sword in the saya.
- Saya
- The scabbard.
- Nakago
- The tang: the extension of the blade inside the handle.
- Mekugi
- A peg passing through the tsuka and nakago to secure the assembly.
- Bo-hi
- A groove along the flat of some blades. It removes material and changes weight and handling.
- Kissaki
- The tip section of the blade.
- Hamon
- The visible line or pattern along the edge.
